Vishay introduces ambient light sensors for consumer electronics

     Vishay Intertechnology today announced the release of a new high-precision digital ambient light sensor, the VEML6030, from its optoelectronics division for consumer and industrial applications. The Vishay Semiconductors VEML6030 packs a high sensitivity photodiode, low noise amplifier and 16-bit ADC into a small, transparent surface mount package of 2mm x 2mm x 0.85mm. The sensor uses Filtron technology, has interrupt function and supports I2C bus to simplify operation.

     This device can operate in the temperature range of -25 ° C to +85 ° C, and can be used for dimming displays and keyboards, optical switches for handheld devices such as smartphones and GPS, notebook computers and PCS, LCD TVS, digital photo frames and digital cameras, and metering for industrial and medical applications. The VEML6030 can be used in smart home lighting control systems for accurate and timely analysis of ambient lighting, even if unexpected situations such as fast-moving storms occur, accurate control operations can be achieved. The device detects natural light at sunset and the rising sun in the morning to control light levels.

     With Filtron technology, the sensor achieves ambient light spectral sensitivity close to that of the human eye, with an output tolerance of less than 10% using O-Trim™ technology. The device can detect ambient light from 0lx to 167klx with resolution as low as 0.005lx/ct, and can operate normally in applications using low visibility (dark) lenses. The VEML6030 can suppress stroboscopic noise at 100Hz and 120Hz, and has good temperature compensation stability. The sensor consumes only 2μA in active mode and 0.5μA in off mode.

     The supply voltage of the VEML6030 is from 2.5V to 3.6V, and the I2C bus voltage is from 1.7V to 3.6V. The device is in a lead-free, 6-PIN package that complies with RoHS and Vishay green standards and is halogen-free.
