Vishay has announced the VEML6040, a digital RGBW sensor that uses Filtron technology to achieve accurate RGBW spectral sensitivity and responds to ambient light spectral sensitivity close to that of the real human eye.

     Vishay has announced the VEML6040, a digital RGBW sensor that uses Filtron technology to achieve accurate RGBW spectral sensitivity and responds to ambient light spectral sensitivity close to that of the real human eye. The Vishay Semiconductors device integrates the PIN photodiode (RGBW) and signal processing IC in a small 2.0mm x 1.25mm x 1.0mm surface-mount package, providing an I2C bus interface to simplify operation.

     The device, introduced today, detects red, green, blue and white light with a 16-bit resolution for each color channel. The VEML6040 is ideal for consumer products such as smartphones, digital cameras, and televisions, allowing these products to adjust the brightness and color temperature of the backlight according to the ambient light, making LCD and LED screens look more comfortable. Sensors contain the circuits needed for color balance, backlight control and color temperature detection in one device, saving space and eliminating the need for external resistors, thereby reducing costs and simplifying design.

     The VEML6040d's built-in ambient photodiode has extremely high sensitivity and can detect illuminance from 0.0056lx to 11.7klx, enabling the device to operate in applications with dark mirrors. The sensor is not responsive to fluorescent stroboscopic, has a current of less than 1μA in off mode, and provides excellent temperature compensation in the range of -40 ° C to +85 ° C.

     The device's operating voltage and I2C bus voltage range from 2.5V to 3.6V, and is packaged in lead-free 4pin OPLGA. The VEML6040 meets RoHS and Vishay green standards and is halogen-free.
