Vishay To Acquire Nexperia’s Newport Wafer Fab

     For roughly $177 million in cash, Vishay Intertechnology will acquire the Newport, South Wales, U.K. wafer fab facility and operations of Nexperia. This was announced by both companies. The Seattle-based ATREG, Inc. acted as Nexperia’s transaction advisers. ATREG is the world’s preeminent business for initiating, brokering, and executing the exchange of semiconductor manufacturing assets.

     Located on 28 acres, Newport Wafer Fab is a 200mm semiconductor wafer fabrication facility that is automotive certified and predominantly supplies the automotive industry. It is the main place of semiconductor production in the United Kingdom.

     According to Vishay, the company's new leadership in early 2023 set the lofty goal of investing roughly $1.2 billion in capacity over three years to better position the company to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the megatrends of e-mobility and sustainability required for a Net Zero economy. Adding Newport Wafer Fab to Vishay’s manufacturing footprint is a complementary move to the company’s capex investment strategy, but it will be crucial to fulfilling the goal of increasing capacity for customers and speeding up the SiC strategy.

     By agreeing to acquire Newport Wafer Fab, Vishay’s purpose is to secure the positions of the highly trained and dedicated people and to invest the required money to set up production for its SiC Trench MOSFETs and diodes. Vishay’s strong financial position and adequate liquidity combined with the company’s proven ability to generate consistent cash flow will help the fab quickly reach full operational and profitability.
