The new motor gate driver IC can be easily migrated from a 12V system to a 48V system
Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the MOTIX TLE9140EQW gate driver IC for brushless DC motors, targeting the demanding 24/48V market. The TLE9140 is designed for automotive motor control applications with higher voltage requirements from 24V to 72V requiring greater system reliability and faster switching behavior. The IC is an ideal complement to the company's MOTIX MCU TLE987x and TLE989x 32-bit motor control SoC solutions, but is also suitable for 48V brushless DC drives in common MCUS on the market. Typical applications include pumps, fans, wipers, HVAC modules, and electronic compressors. In addition, the TLE9140 can be used as a three-phase motor gate driver in commercial, construction and agricultural vehicles as well as light electric vehicles (such as eBikes, eScooters or motorcycles).
Andreas Doll, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Smart Power at Infineon, said: "Our new motor gate driver IC enables customers to easily extend their existing 12V MOTIX TLE987x and TLE989x motor control designs to 24V or 48V systems. "The TLE9140EQW can reuse hardware and software designs, allowing our customers to reduce time to market and optimize development costs as they move to 24/48V systems."
The gate driver IC provides functional safety according to ISO 26262 ASIL b, which is packaged in a small TS-DSO-32 package. The IC provides high voltage capability up to 110V, ~230nC/MOSFET gate driver capability up to 20kHz and SPI communication. It features active low side (LS) free regulation during V-SM overvoltage (OV) and has a wide range of important diagnostic and protective functions such as timeout watchdog, drain-source monitoring, overvoltage, undervoltage, cross current and overtemperature protection, and disconnect state diagnosis.
In addition, the TLE9140 includes the company's patented gate shaping feature, an adaptive MOSFET control that compensates for fluctuations in the system's MOSFET parameters. It automatically adjusts the gate current to achieve the desired switching behavior. This allows the system to optimize EMI through slower conversion rates, while minimizing power consumption through shorter dead time and shorter rise/fall times.
The company's MOTIX motor control ic comes with software and tools to speed up the evaluation and design process. The TLE9140 evaluation board is user-friendly and allows for rapid evaluation and prototyping. In addition, it provides the TLE9140 with a configuration wizard and a device driver that provides a simple API for generating control frames for external bridging drivers via SPI. Both are free.
