The most energy efficient PCIe Gen5 NVMe 2.0 client SSD controller

     Silicon Motion Technology Corporation has announced the SM2508, the most energy efficient PCIe Gen5 NVMe 2.0 client SSD controller for AI PCS and game consoles. This is the world's first PCIe Gen5 client SSD controller using TSMC's 6nm EUV process, which delivers 50% lower power consumption compared to competing products' 12nm process. The entire SSD consumes less than 7W, and its power efficiency is 1.7 times higher than the PCIe Gen4 SSD and 70% higher than the current competing PCIe Gen5 products.

     The device is a high-performance, low-power PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe 2.0 SSD controller designed for AI-enabled PC laptops. It supports eight NAND channels of up to 3,600MT/s each, providing sequential performance speeds of up to 14.5GB/s and 13.6GB/s and random performance speeds of up to 2.5M IOPS, a 2x performance improvement over PCIe Gen4 products.

     The device maximizes PCIe Gen5 performance with a power consumption of approximately 3W. It utilizes the company's proprietary 8th-generation nandextend technology, which combines on-disk training algorithms to reduce ECC time. This enhancement improves performance and maximizes power efficiency while ensuring compatibility with the latest 3D TLC/QLC NAND technologies, allowing for higher data density, and meeting the evolving needs of next-generation AI PCS.
