TI introduces the industry's first 16-section integrated lithium-ion monitor and protector
Texas Instruments has introduced the industry's first integrated battery monitor and protector, the bq76PL455A-Q1, which measures 16 batteries at a time. The product provides high-precision battery cell voltage monitoring for up to 256 large series cells and enables smarter battery management systems in electric and hybrid vehicles and grid energy storage systems.
The Bq76PL455A-Q1 accurately calculates the state and health of the battery pack by measuring the cell voltage, and balances the active and passive cells in order to extract as much power as possible from the cell. Passive cell balancing compensates for the charge voltage mismatch, while active cell balancing maximizes the amount of charge per charge. For hybrid and electric vehicles, this reduces production costs for manufacturers while increasing driving range for drivers.
System integrators use the bq76PL455A-Q1 to develop innovative battery management systems, which also include efficiency and safety considerations. Dr. Joachim Wagner, Head of Product Management and pre-Development at Preh GmbH, said: "Preh is pleased to work with TI to implement the design features that make our battery management system stand out from the pack. We intend to use our solutions in several automotive and non-automotive applications to provide users with innovative solutions."
