STMicroelectronics expands its communications interface product lineup with industry-certified USB-C and power transmission solutions
STMicroelectronics announces an industry-certified software solution based on its market-leading STM32 microcontroller that makes USB Type-C™ and Power Transmission (PD) integration easier. The free STM32 USB-C and PD middleware stack is compatible with the USB Type-C 1.2 and USB Power Delivery 2.0 specifications, making it easy for customers to quickly deploy this new technology on their end products and take full advantage of the rich capabilities of the STM32 ARM®Cortex®-M microcontroller.
The new firmware stack, X-CUBE-USB-PD, is initially based on the STM32F0 entry-level Cortex-M0 processor and enables designers to upgrade legacy USB devices, bringing great convenience to end users. Usb-c and Power Transfer technologies define a front-to-back connector capable of transmitting all data (including video or proprietary protocols) required for an application function, acting as a power source up to 100W or charging devices connected to a USB port.
"Our USB-C and power transfer software stack is an example of how successful the STM32 family of products can be, setting a reference standard in all embedded processing applications from smartphones to the Internet of Things," said Daniel Colonna, Marketing Director of ST's Microcontroller Product Group. "The STM32 product family brings the world's largest selection of price, power, and performance options to the development community of market-recognized industry-standard embedded processor architectures, backed by a full-featured ecosystem that includes free software and low-cost boards to help customers minimize development cycles and maximize return on investment."
Cost and printed circuit board space are important advantages of the STM32 and the new software stack solution, because the STM32 has a wealth of on-chip features such as voltage comparators, analog-to-digital converters, timers and direct access technology, and the actual design requires a simple analog front end consisting of several passive devices.
