STMicroelectronics' STNRGPF01 Switching Power Supply (SMPS) controller offers the flexibility and energy efficiency of digital power technology without any technical challenges and without the need to spend time developing custom DSP(digital signal processor) code.

STMicroelectronics' STNRGPF01 Switching Power Supply (SMPS) controller offers the flexibility and energy efficiency of digital power technology without any technical challenges and without the need to spend time developing custom DSP(digital signal processor) code.

In high-power applications above 1kW or 2kW, an interleaving CCMPFC(continuous current mode power factor correction) topology must be used to handle this level of power while ensuring suitable magnet volume and shunt. In addition, the demand for higher energy efficiency, communication connectivity and configuration options is driving designers towards expensive and complex digital signal processing solutions.

STs new interlaced boost PFC topology SMPS controller is fast and simple to configure in STMicroelectronics' eDesignSuite online design environment, with built-in I2C and UART interfaces for monitoring functions. The controller supports three interleaving phases, which ensures low ripple current, simplifies EMI filter design using small inductors, and has a power range between 500W and 20kW. In addition, the STNRGPF01 implements a flexible, configurable phase reduction strategy that automatically optimizes the number of operating phases to maintain high energy efficiency under all load conditions.

STNRGPF01 operates in CCM, fixed frequency, and homogeneous flow control mode. The hardware's internal current loop ensures accurate period-by-cycle adjustment, while a digital proportional integration (PI) controller is used to manage the external voltage loop to ensure fast dynamic response. The switching frequency can be set in the range of several kHz to 300kHz to control the output stage of an IGBT or MOSFET. Other configurable features include inrush current limiting and soft PFC power-on.

By simply configuring STNRGPF01 in an eDesignSuite environment, you can deliver the benefits of digital power technology for flexibility, reliability, safety and energy efficiency in equipment such as industrial welders, motor drives, pumps, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), industrial or consumer electronics air conditioners, and home appliances such as, Refrigerator, washing machine, dryer and kitchenware.

The STMicroelectronics design approach overcomes traditional design limitations and allows designers to focus on the final application. In the eDesignSuite design environment, enter the converter specifications, run the configurator, and automatically generate schematics, bill of materials (BoM), downloadable firmware, and then configure the chip. Designers can gain flexibility that analog controllers do not have, without having to understand the processor, memory, interrupt mechanisms, and develop the code needed to implement functionality on a digital signal processor.
