STMicroelectronics announces new series of 100V grooved Schottky rectifier diodes to improve efficiency and power density

     STMicroelectronics introduces 100V grooved Schottky rectifier diodes that improve the efficiency of high switching frequency power converters. With the wide application of technologies such as wide-band gap semiconductors with low switching losses, designers have begun to increase the operating frequency of power converters and constantly refresh the power density. However, when the switching frequency becomes higher, the energy loss of traditional flat diodes used as rectifiers (including silicon Schottky devices) also becomes larger, severely limiting the improvement of conversion efficiency.

     ST's grooved Schottky diodes significantly reduce the energy loss of the rectifier, and provide excellent forward voltage and reverse recovery characteristics to improve energy efficiency while increasing power density. The forward voltage is 50-100mV higher than similar flat diodes, depending on current and temperature conditions. Switching to these devices alone can increase energy efficiency by 0.5%.

     The new series has a total of 28 products, rated from 1A to 15A, divided into eight grades, packaging with a variety of surface mount, the application range is divided into industrial grade and automotive grade two categories. Target applications for industrial-grade products include small switching power supplies and auxiliary power supplies for telecommunications equipment, servers and smart metering devices. Typical automotive applications are space-constrained automotive systems, such as LED headlights, reverse polarity protection, and low-voltage DC/DC converters. Automotive grade products are certified to the AEC-Q101 standard, production facilities are PPAP compliant, and operating temperatures range from -40°C to 175°C.

     When used in conjunction with ST flyback power converters and buck-boost converters, such as VIPer controllers and HVLED001A offline LED drivers, 100V grooved Schottky rectiators meet the active component Bill of Materials requirements for switching power supplies. St's eDesign Suite Rectifier Diodes Simulator software tool supports the new full range of products, helping designers select current ratings and packages, simulate current and voltage waveforms, and estimate energy efficiency.

     The new diodes are 100% avalanche tested during production to ensure good device robustness and system reliability, packaged in DPAK as well as SOD123 Flat, SOD128 Flat, SMB Flat and PSMC (TO227A) surface mount.
