STMicroelectronics announces Energy efficient wireless charging chipset
STMicroelectronics introduces miniature wireless charging chipsets that save board space, simplify case design and sealing, and shorten development cycles for ultra-compact wearable sports devices, fitness monitors, medical sensors, and remote controls.
The STWBC-WA charging and transmitting controller, combined with the STWLC04 wireless charging receiver, uses a smaller coil than other wireless charging chipsets on the market, using only 11mm diameter coils at the receiving end and 20mm line diagram at the transmitting end, which can transmit up to 1W of electrical energy, making the appearance of the application device smaller and thinner. If large coils and full-bridge circuits are used at the transmitting end, the transmission capacity can be increased to 3W. Because the traditional charging interface is no longer required, wireless charging simplifies the housing design and sealing technology to prevent dust or water vapor from entering the machine.
This full-featured chipset supports wireless charging of Li-ion or Li-poly batteries and includes safety features such as Foreign-Object Detection (FOD), active transmitter presence detection, and receiver overheat protection. Transmitter chip built-in driver, the local support half bridge and full bridge topology, supporting firmware configuration is simple and optional, convenient for customers to quickly develop overall solutions or customized applications. The receiver chip supports direct charging, reduces board size, and has a 32-bit microcontroller core, an efficient buck converter with synchronous rectification, and an internal driver.
With ST's plug-and-play STEVAL-ISB038V1 evaluation board kit, developers can quickly start wireless charging projects. The development kit includes a transmitter circuit board and a receiver circuit board . With a Graphical User interface (GUI), developers can monitor system behavior and tune parameters. In addition to Gerber documents and bills of materials, the kit includes a user manual.
