Qualcomm announces 5th generation embedded Gobi data platform with LTE multi-band support
Qualcomm has introduced the fifth generation of its embedded Gobi reference data connectivity platform, which can be used on mobile devices including ultra-thin laptops, tablets and dual-purpose tablets. Based on Qualcomm Gobi 4G LTE wireless baseband modem MDM9615 And MDM9215 This technology can provide fast LTE connectivity on global FDD and TDD networks, while being backward compatible with HSPA+ and EV-DO networks. This will allow the platform to support LTE bands in different regions while being backward compatible with existing 2G/3G technologies, enabling Gobi 4G LTE terminals to connect locally to faster LTE networks as well as to the Internet via global 3G networks. The reference platform will support leading operating systems, such as Windows 8 and Android, and provide broadband access options for individual carriers. It also supports these leading operating systems across multiple processing platforms, including our Snapdragon? Snapdragon dual and quad-core processors and x86 platforms.
Huawei, Novatel Wireless, Option, Sierra Wireless and ZTE will first adopt embedded modules based on the Gobi 5th generation reference platform in various types of terminals for different markets. Making them the superior 4G LTE solution for a wide range of mobile Internet terminals.
Fram Akiki, senior director of product management for Qualcomm's CDMA Technology Group, said: "Mobile computing and broadband connectivity have become indispensable 'weapons' for business people. With Windows 8, we expect to see more and more mobile computing devices available to connected consumers around the world. Our fifth-generation Gobi reference platform can help Oems develop products on their operating systems and hardware platforms of choice to meet the growing demand for mobile connectivity."
Qualcomm's latest Gobi 4G LTE connectivity reference platform includes embedded GPS capabilities and provides an application programming interface (API) for LTE expansion. The interface is compatible with leading connectivity standards, including CDMA2000? 1xEV-DO versions A and B, HSPA +, dual-carrier HSPA +, TD-SCDMA, and LTE, while integrating backward compatibility with HSPA and EV-DO. The API provides a common software interface for developing connection managers, GPS applications, and other management or security solutions to connect, locate, and manage a wide range of 3G/4G terminals, regardless of operating system and wireless technology. This interface will help streamline the product development process, facilitate application software development by third-party developers, and bring greater flexibility to end manufacturers.
Kirk Schell, Executive director and general manager of Dell's Commercial Client Products group, said: "As one of the most widely used business PCS in the world, Dell Latitude laptops need to support a variety of different technologies to enable our customers to truly stay connected anytime, anywhere, and Qualcomm's Gobi platform helps us achieve this goal." With the development of mobile broadband technology, Qualcomm's Gobi technology has gained the favor of our customers with its multi-mode capability, because it can stay connected no matter what network they use."
Dilip Bhatia, vice president and general manager of Lenovo ThinkPad, said: "Qualcomm's Gobi platform has proven to be an attractive wireless solution for embedded mobile broadband connectivity, enhancing the performance, security and reliability of our ThinkPad laptops. We look forward to delivering a faster mobile Internet experience to our customers with Gobi 4G LTE technology."
He Jinjun, Director of Huawei Terminal Module Business Unit: "Huawei's mobile broadband modules and data cards are widely used by Oems and consumers around the world, so support for multi-mode is a major feature of our products. Qualcomm's fifth-generation Gobi reference platform will provide our LTE end users with the multimode support they need to stay connected anytime, anywhere."
Rob Hadley, Chief Marketing Officer, Novada Wireless, said: "Our accelerator module portfolio includes a wide range of LTE-enabled products based on Qualcomm's Gobi technology. We look forward to providing our OEM customers with new embedded modules using next-generation technology for laptops, netbooks and tablets."
Bernard Schaballie, General manager of Embedded Solutions at Option, said: "Option has a long-standing relationship with Qualcomm and is committed to delivering innovative 3G, 4G LTE and WLAN connectivity solutions with enhanced performance, functionality and availability. Qualcomm Gobi has become an important enabling technology, and we look forward to using the fifth-generation Gobi reference platform for our new GTM801LGA module family."
Dan Schieler, senior vice president and general manager of Sierra Wireless 'mobile computing division, said: "Sierra Wireless has been providing LTE-enabled wireless modules since 2010, and Qualcomm's Gobi technology has been an important factor in the success of our LTE module program. Our LTE modules enable Oems to embed support for the latest mobile broadband technologies in a wide range of terminals, and the fifth-generation Gobi reference platform will help deliver a fast and consistent connected user experience."
Dr. Shulang Liu, Director of Data Product Planning at ZTE, said: "Qualcomm's Gobi technology is now widely used in a variety of mobile broadband USB modems and mobile hotspots. LTE will provide consumers with the fast data transfer and reliable connectivity they need for an efficient mobile computing experience. We look forward to providing our customers with fast LTE USB modems based on Gobi technology."
As one of the industry's largest suppliers of wireless processors and software technology, Qualcomm has a diverse portfolio of processors and software products covering all types of devices. System designers now have the flexibility to choose a Gobi embedded solution to provide 3G high-speed, multi-carrier 4G LTE support. Qualcomm also offers a highly integrated all-in-one Snapdragon processor family that provides integrated multi-mode 3G/4G, dual-band Wi-Fi. The choice of Bluetooth, FM radio connections and a different number of CPU cores allows for optimal design efficiency.
