Provide advanced BBUS for AI data centers to power AI roadmap

Infineon Technologies AG has presented a roadmap for a next-generation battery backup unit (BBU) solution that can be used for the uninterrupted operation of artificial intelligence data centers to avoid the risk of power outages and data loss. The BBU solution is designed to provide efficient, reliable, scalable power conversion for AI server racks with power density up to 400% of the industry average. Bbus is critical to AI data centers, providing, and protecting sensitive AI hardware from voltage spikes, surges, and other power anomalies by filtering and regulating power supply to data center devices. Battery solutions, combined with a variety of best-in-class topologies, provide customers with more ease of use, thus strengthening the company's position in the field of artificial intelligence.

"Our energy-efficient battery backup units are designed to keep AI servers running smoothly with superior performance, flexibility and efficiency, meeting the various power levels required by AI servers. By mastering the three related semiconductor materials Si, silicon carbide and gallium nitride, we are confident that Infineon Semiconductor solutions will set a new standard in powering AI data centers."
Downtime or system failures in AI data centers can be costly, with 41 percent of companies surveyed in a 2024 survey by International Trust and Investment Company saying the cost per hour of downtime ranges from $1 million to more than $5 million over a year. 35% of these failures were attributed to power component quality issues. To address this, the company's Partial Power Converter (PPC) is a semiconductor solution focused on improving the performance and reliability of power systems and is a leading technology for battery backup devices.
The intermediate solution, represented by the 5.5-kilowatt BBU, uses the company's proprietary topology and integrates the Si and technology to provide ultra-high efficiency and high power density. The industry-first 12 kw system combines four more kilowatts of power conversion cards using its PSOC microcontrollers,40 v and 80 v OptiMOS and EiceDRIVER gate drivers for unmatched performance and flexibility, with a power density four times higher than the industry average. By parallelizing multiple cards on the motherboard, higher power levels can be obtained, making it easy to scale and simplify maintenance. If one of the cards fails, the system will continue to operate at reduced capacity, minimizing downtime and ensuring high reliability. This modular approach allows the system to be customized to specific power requirements without having to redesign the entire system, creating significant benefits for customers in terms of performance and reliability.
To further demonstrate the capabilities of the latest BBU technology, the company is developing a complete system demonstration for its battery backup solution. These demonstrations will demonstrate the benefits of PPC technology in practical applications, providing a clear path forward for the next generation of AI data centers.
