Power Integrations introduces thyristor dimming LYTSwitch-7 LED driver IC that reduces BOM by 40%

     Power Integrations, the industry leader in high efficiency, high reliability LED driver ics, introduces the LYTSwitch™-7 IC product line for single-stage non-isolated step-down dimmable LED driver applications. These devices are packaged in an ultra-thin SO-8 package that delivers 22 W of output power without the need for heat sinks and are extremely efficient, making them ideal for light bulb, tube and other lighting applications. In the design of LYTSwitch-7, only a simple passive attenuating circuit is needed to meet the requirements of thyristor dimmers without a drain circuit. In addition, the inductors in the design can use off-the-shelf commercial standard inductors with only a single winding. The LYTSwitch-7 is designed to reduce the number of components to as few as 20. The design of a typical dimmable LED driver typically requires about 35 components.

     The YTSwitch-7 IC offers a tangential (SCR) dimming scheme with a wide dimming range and unidirectional dimming response. LED drivers can achieve an efficiency of more than 86%, about 2% higher than traditional dimming products, and also have high power factor, precise adjustment rate and comprehensive protection features. They are suitable for low or high input voltage designs, as well as for wide range input designs in commercial lighting applications in the United States. These designs operate in the voltage range of 90 VAC to 305 VAC and require thyristor dimming in low-voltage applications.

The built-in 725 V MOSFETs provide better voltage resistance during input surges. At the same time, the design of the no-drain circuit can ensure that the driver will not generate too much heat in the case of compatibility with many thyristor dimmers, so the design of the driver is more efficient and reliable."

     Like all Power Integrations LED drivers, the LYTSwitch-7 IC offers a range of protection features, including thermal return-back protection that turns the driver off immediately. In abnormally high temperature environments, this function automatically reduces the output current and dimms the LED light, which protects the IC, the driver and the entire fixture. The developers found that the thermal reentry feature could help reduce the electrical and mechanical costs of meeting reliability goals. Because the IC can automatically control the abnormal increase in temperature without the lamp being extinguished. The device also provides open circuit, short circuit, input and output overvoltage, overcurrent, and safe working area (SOA) protection.
