Power Integrations introduces the TinySwitch-5 IC to help power efficient design

     Power Integrations, a well-known company in the field of energy-efficient power conversion for high voltage integrated circuits, announced the introduction of TinySwitch™-5, extending the output power of its popular family of integrated offline switching ics to 175W. The new TinySwitch-5 uses simple diode rectification and optocoupler feedback to achieve up to 92% efficiency.

     More than 6 billion TinySwitch ics have been sold worldwide and are widely used for biasing and auxiliary power in home appliances, computing, communications, industrial and medical applications. Designers have long favored the simplicity and efficiency of TinySwitch products (especially in light loads). TinySwitch IC is the first product to feature Power Integrations EcoSmart™ technology. Since 1998, this award-winning technology has saved approximately 200 TWH of electricity by dramatically reducing standby power consumption.

     The TinySwitch-5 switching IC features an advanced control engine that automatically adjusts the switching frequency and power output to maximize efficiency even under light load conditions. This allows the power supply to easily meet the 300mW light load power consumption limit set out in the European Commission's Energy-Related Products (ErP) Directive 2009/125/EC, while still providing up to 220mW of output power for the display, control and communication functions of the final product. The heat-resistant enhanced package means that the TinySwitch-5 IC offers up to 75W of output power without a heat sink, while input undervoltage and overvoltage protection ensures durability in countries and regions where mains voltage is unstable.
