ON Semiconductor is expanding its highly rated 1/3-inch 1 megapixel (MP) image sensor product lineup with early samples of the company's first backlighting (BSI) sensor technology for the automotive imaging market.

     ON Semiconductor is expanding its highly rated 1/3-inch 1 megapixel (MP) image sensor product lineup with early samples of the company's first backlighting (BSI) sensor technology for the automotive imaging market. Compared to the current market-leading AR0132AT CMOS image sensor for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), the innovative new BSI sensor technology offers four times better low-light signal-to-noise ratio, a 40 percent increase in visible light sensitivity, and more than 60 percent improved near-infrared (NIR) performance.

     "The advantages this new BSI technology brings to the automotive market are exciting," said Sandor Barna, vice president of ON Semiconductor's automotive and scanning division. Based on this state-of-the-art BSI device, we are delivering an early sample stage with truly industry-leading low-light performance, demonstrating our continued commitment to invest in automotive imaging technology."

     The first product to use this new technology will be the AR0136AT 1/3-inch optical CMOS digital image sensor, offering 1280 x 960 resolution and 3.75 micron BSI pixels (p). The AR0136AT supports linear and high Dynamic range (HDR) modes and is a single-chip HDR scheme with 120 decibels (dB) dynamic range in HDR mode. It has an output pixel rate of 74.25 MP/ s (maximum), resulting in frame rates of 45 frames per second (fps) at 960p resolution and 60 frames per second at 720p resolution. Its operating junction temperature range is -40 °C to 125 °C and is fully compliant with AEC-Q100.
