ON Semiconductor introduces two new families of power factor correction (PFC) off-line AC-DC drivers for high-performance LED lighting applications. The NCL30085, NCL30086, and NCL30088 extend the NCL3008x product family for single-stage design applications requiring up to 60 watts (W) of power with high power factors. The NCL30030 expands existing solutions to support higher power (up to 150 W) two-stage topologies that require low optical striation and wide LED forward voltage variation ranges.

"These solutions provide precision current stabilization with our unique architecture, which makes LED lighting designs more flexible, and their common control approach suitable for future designs."
NCL30085, NCL30086, and NCL30088 utilize power factor correction current control algorithms to make them suitable for flyback step-boost and single-ended primary inductor (SEPIC) topologies. Operating in quasi-resonant mode, these devices provide the highest energy efficiency across a wide range of AC voltages and load classes. They employ innovative control methods that achieve accurate current stabilization (typical values within 2%) from the primary end alone.
The non-dimming NCL30088 complements the NCL30086, which is "intelligently dimmable" and supports analog and/or pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming with a single input that controls the average LED current. The family also includes the NCL30085, which supports 3 levels of logarithmic step dimming (70%, 25%, 5%). Therefore, it can send signaling to the controller by switching the on/off state of the wall AC switch to reduce the LED current point and reduce the light output. All three devices include a user-configurable current-thermal reversal mechanism to help prevent overheating and enable manufacturers to support longer life warranties.
The NCL30030 is a two-stage PFC controller and quasi-resonant flyback controller optimized for medium to high power LED lighting applications up to 150 W. This device is ideal for commercial lighting, such as low ceiling lights, high ceiling lights and street lamps. The NCL30030 utilizes a proprietary multiplier architecture to provide low harmonic distortion and a power factor close to 1 when operating in critical conduction mode (CrM).
