ON Semiconductor introduces a new low power USB-C series

     Driving energy efficient innovation, On Semiconductor announced the launch of the latest USB-C(Type-C) family of devices that are fully compliant with the newly revised 1.3 specification, making it easy for design engineers to integrate into USB-C systems. The new device, which includes two controllers and a switch, is specifically targeted at applications such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, as well as use cases in the industrial and automotive sectors.

     The FUSB303 port controller converts current and new systems to USB-C interfaces, supporting applications that require source (SRC), sink (SNK), or dual role port (DRP) modes. This new device provides automatic detection with minimal processor interaction and firmware support, and offers flexibility and customization options. Mobile and ultra-portable applications will benefit from the FUSB303's superior and best-in-class low-power performance. In standby mode, the controller consumes less than 10 microamps (uA) and is available in an ultra-thin (1.6x1.6x0.375mm)QFN-12 package, which is thinner and lighter than the standard CSP package for increasingly space-constrained designs.

     The FSUSB242 from On Semiconductor is a USB-C compliant port protection switch that provides high voltage and surge protection. As required by the standard, the port protection switch allows two USB sources to be multiplexed to a common DP/DM pin while maintaining signal integrity. The device features high voltage protection and provides surge protection up to +20 volts according to IEC64000-4-5 specifications without the need for an external transient voltage suppressor (TVS).

     The FSUSB242 is suitable for mobile applications due to its low power consumption, the WLCSP-9 package saves space on the board and eliminates the need for an external TVS. FUSB302BV is a USB-C controller that is specifically designed for power supply (PD) solutions in automotive systems. Although other solutions are only suitable for consumer electronics applications, the device is AEC-Q100 certified and can be inspected (including connection detection and direction detection), making it one of the most efficient and flexible products. Unlike other solutions, FUSB302BV communicates via an I2C interface and does not integrate a microprocessor. This ensures that the device meets the requirements of the automotive sector for minimum energy consumption and low self-heating levels.
