NXP launches a new automotive processor platform to accelerate the time to market for future vehicles

NXP Semiconductor announced a new control and computing platform for connected, electric and autonomous vehicles. The NXP S32 platform is the world's first fully scalable automotive computing architecture, soon to be adopted by premium and general production automotive brands. The S32 platform provides the unified architecture of the microcontroller microprocessor (MCU/MPU), providing exactly the same software environment for different application platforms.

The NXP S32 platform is able to meet the challenges of future vehicle development through a number of architectural innovations designed to enable automakers to bring rich in-vehicle experiences and autonomous driving capabilities to market faster than ever before.

     Modern cars are a complex complex of applications and different software strategies, and for this reason, automakers face a serious integration challenge. According to auto industry estimates, advanced cars have more lines of code than modern airliners. This complexity puts Tier 1 suppliers and Oems under tremendous pressure to meet market expectations for more electronic capabilities within the constraints of increasingly tight time-to-market.

     NXP's new S32 platform addresses these challenges with the industry's highest performance MCU, a smooth transition to MPU performance, and the exact same software development environment for a variety of automotive applications. The new software environment allows developers to reuse expensive research and development efforts, so they can respond faster to changing vehicle architectures and meet tight time-to-market demands. The S32 platform was developed to deliver automotive standard quality, reliability and ASILD performance across multiple application Spaces.

     Lucadem Broggi, senior principal analyst for automotive electronics and semiconductors at IHSMarkit, said: "Traditional and emerging automakers, and even not just Tier 1 suppliers, are looking to adopt a standardized approach to work across different vehicle domains, segments and geographies to meet increasing performance demands. At the same time, ensure that the product can be quickly brought to market, and control the soaring development costs. A common architecture and scalable approach can simultaneously reduce hardware and software development time for domain-critical applications such as ADAS, autonomous driving, or connectivity.
