NXP introduces the industry-leading LPC microcontroller family for low-power, entry-level iot applications
NXP Semiconductors, the world's leading supplier of microcontrollers, introduces the LPC84x series. The LPC84x series is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding LPC800 family of 32-bit microcontrollers (based on ARM® 30MHz Cortex-M0 +), designed to balance power, performance and price to meet the market demand for simpler and faster development to make next-generation designs smarter, cheaper and more efficient.
Geoff Lees, senior vice president and general manager of the Microcontroller Business line at NXP, said: "We are very excited to work with our broad customer base to bring the LPC84x series into volume production. The new family extends the unique and innovative features of the LPC800 compared to the aging proprietary 8-bit MCUS."
The innovation of the LPC84x series is based on a unique way to configure the device without CPU intervention, further enhancing the integrated energy saving features and providing developers with greater flexibility. After power-on, Fast Access Initialization Memory (FAIM) allows the LPC84x microcontroller's clock to start in low frequency mode, minimizing startup current consumption. In addition, the input/output (IO) port starts up immediately and in the desired configuration, avoiding any potential terminating problems with connected devices such as MOSFETs.
In the LPC84x series, the LPC845 offers an additional flexible capacitive touch sensing solution that can operate in sleep or deep sleep mode with very low power consumption. The LPC845 solution handles up to nine capacitive buttons (such as sliders, knobs, or button matrices) in different sensor configurations, and enables additional capabilities through supporting software libraries and tools, including automatic calibration for optimal performance in noisy or wet environments and reduced error triggering. Evaluation kits and software packages will be available from the third quarter of 2017.
NXP's LPC800 series has been a global success, and the LPC84x series continues to maintain industry-leading innovation excellence, with a powerful 32-bit state configurable timer and PWM, advanced DMA, autonomous serial interface and patented IO switch matrix, and any peripheral function can be assigned to any of the 56 GPIOs. NXP's new LPC84x MCU family enables developers to implement 64KB of integrated flash memory and 16KB of SRAM, plus a 12-bit ADC, two 10-bit Dacs, and an optional output self-excited oscillator (FRO), further extending the LPC800 family. A feature-rich entry-level MCU at a price point comparable to an 8-bit MCU. Customers will benefit from the LPC84x series' enhanced integration in monitoring, data acquisition, sensing, real-time control, and graphical interfaces to enable essential control and connectivity tasks in a variety of consumer, industrial, and emerging iot applications.
