Micron Technology introduces mobile 3D NAND solutions for next-generation smartphones
Micron Technology, Inc. introduced the first 3D NAND storage technology for mobile devices and introduced the first products based on the Universal Flash Memory Storage (UFS) 2.1 standard. Micron's first mobile 3D NAND 32GB solution is targeted at the mid-to-high-end smartphone segment, which accounts for approximately 50% of the global smartphone market . As mobile devices replace PCS as consumers' primary computing devices, user behavior has a significant impact on the mobile memory and storage requirements of devices. Micron's mobile 3D NAND addresses these issues with an unparalleled user experience that includes smooth transfer of high-resolution video, higher gaming bandwidth, faster startup times, better photography, and faster file loading.
"Micron continues to improve NAND technology with the introduction of 3D NAND and UFS products for mobile devices." "3D NAND improves performance, capacity and reliability, helping to meet customers' growing demand for mobile storage and enabling an even better end-user experience," said Mike Rayfield, vice president of Micron's mobile Products business.
To meet the higher hardware requirements resulting from the growth in mobile video and multimedia consumption, as well as the higher storage requirements expected after the launch of 5G wireless networks, Micron 3D NAND technology vertically stacks multiple layers of data storage units with exceptional precision. The capacity of storage devices made using this technology is three times higher than that of devices made using the previous generation of planar NAND technology.
By stacking vertically, Micron concentrated more memory units into a smaller chip area, producing the industry's smallest 3D NAND memory chip with an area of just 60.217mm2. Smaller chips allow for extremely small packages, which could free up more space for batteries or allow for smaller specifications for mobile devices.
"3D NAND technology is critical to the continued growth of smartphones and other mobile devices." Greg Wong, founder and principal analyst at Forward Insights, said: "With the advent of 5G networks, coupled with the increasing impact of mobile devices on our digital lives, smartphone manufacturers need the most advanced technology to store and manage the growing volume of data. "Micron's mobile 3D NAND technology enables a superior user experience in high-resolution video, gaming and photography, perfectly meeting the evolving data storage needs of the market."
