Microchip Technology announced the launch of its next generation electric Energy Metering Analog Front End (AFE), the MCP3911. The device features two 24-bit Delta-Sigma analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) that operate at 3V, providing industry-leading accuracy: 94.5dB SINAD and 106.5dB THD. By accurately measuring from start-up to maximum current, the device provides improved watt-hour meter and power monitoring performance, facilitating faster calibration during production. Four different power modes provide flexibility for extremely low power designs down to 0.8 mA per channel or for higher speed signal and harmonic components. The extended stage temperature range allows operation at -40 ° C to +125 ° C.
The MCP3911 also has 2.7V to 3.6V analog and digital operation capabilities that simplify the interface by turning off the same power rail as the microcontroller. Built-in voltage reference with low temperature coefficient and PGA for each channel further enable metering and monitoring design.
As the global power metering infrastructure upgrades and the power monitoring market grows, designers of power metering and other signal acquisition applications are looking for ways to improve performance while reducing costs. Microchip can meet these needs with the industry's highest precision AFE, reducing power consumption with its low-power mode and reducing costs by reducing the number of power rails and external components required.
