Melexis introduces a 600 mah single-coil fan driver

     Melexis Corporation announced the launch of the 600mah single-coil fan driver IC MLX90297, designed for energy-efficient cooling systems. Expanding the company's portfolio of All-in-One single-coil fan drivers, the MLX90297 integrates a highly sensitive Hall effect sensor with two powerful half-bridge output stages and is a further extension of the successful MLX90287 device.

     In addition to the MLX90287's minimum speed setting function, the MLX90297's speed curve can also be adjusted by adding an additional resistor. The MLX90297's soft start and soft handover mechanisms have been further refined to achieve industry-leading noise levels and low vibration at higher speeds, but maximum torque is not compromised. The MLX90297 has a lower driver resistance (RDSon), which, combined with its built-in current limit, allows the driver to be used in fans with coil resistance significantly below 10 ohms. The electrostatic discharge (ESD) performance of the MLX90297 has been further enhanced up to 9KV HBM. The device is available in a direct-lead SOIC8 package with an additional DFN10 3mm x 3mm bare pad package option for very small fan and fan applications with motor currents up to 600mA.

Where previously a Hall sensor external TSSOP16 fan driver required up to 22 resistors and transistors, now a SOIC8 fan driver solution requires only 2 resistors and a decoupling capacitor.
