Maxwell Technologies has announced the introduction of the 24V Supercapacitor Engine Start Module (ESM), which is ideal for improving the uptime and power reliability of diesel engines.

     Maxwell Technologies has announced the introduction of the 24V Supercapacitor Engine Start Module (ESM), which is ideal for improving the uptime and power reliability of diesel engines. The new product builds on the success of the Maxwell 12V engine start module to get vehicles up and running reliably in cold weather or infrequent start conditions, further enriching Maxwell's engine start solution. It also benefits all kinds of diesel engine vehicles and equipment used in transportation, construction, national defense, agriculture, forestry, mining and other industries.

     As we all know, diesel engines are often difficult to start when not used for a long time or under low temperature conditions. The 24V ESM can completely take over the engine starting task and start the engine smoothly when the battery voltage is severely reduced and the battery cannot start the engine. By integrating Maxwell's 24V ESM, original equipment manufacturers (Oems) can improve vehicle quality and help customers avoid common problems with starting diesel engines with lead-acid batteries, thereby increasing customer productivity.

     Charles Hedrick III, control systems and electrical engineer at Manitowoc Cranes, an industrial crane manufacturer, said: "Maxwell's 24V ESM allows us to start our 6.7-litre diesel engine machinery smoothly in extremely cold temperatures, even if the battery is deliberately discharged completely. Using an ESM instead of a battery to complete the start-up task ensures that the engine provides a stable power supply to sensitive electronics, thus avoiding the problems caused by battery exhaustion and failure to start."

     Jeff Brakley, senior business portfolio Manager at Maxwell Technologies, said: "We are always striving to provide our customers with new technologies that make it easier and more efficient for them to do business. The introduction of the 24V ESM brings the benefits of reliable start-up to a wider market, minimizing the adverse impact of cold temperatures and long downtime on customers in transportation, construction, agriculture, forestry and mining."

     Maxwell's 24V ESM is available in two models: ULTRA 31/900/24V for starting diesel engines up to 12.5 liters; ULTRA 31/1100/24V for starting diesel engines up to 15 litres. Both modules are available in BCI industry standard 31-size packages.

     Unlike batteries, which generate and store energy through chemical reactions, supercapacitors store energy using an electric field. This electrostatic energy storage mechanism of supercapacitors enables them not only to complete charge and discharge in less than one second, but also to work normally in a wide temperature range of -40 ° C ~+65 ° C (-40 ° F ~+149 ° F), reliably run more than one million charge and discharge cycles, and resist vibration and shock. Maxwell provides supercapacitor cells with 1 to 3400F capacitors and multi-capacitor modules with 12 to 160V capacitors.
