Maxim Integrated's MAX86150 provides pleurogram (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements via a mobile battery-powered device for health monitoring. Implementing simultaneous PPG and ECG measurements has been a challenge because designers have had to use two separate biosensors, which together consume more board space and power than mobile devices can typically handle. In addition, achieving high accuracy in measurements can be challenging, especially in cases where low perfusion levels or dry skin may affect sensor sensitivity.

 

The MAX86150 overcomes these challenges by sampling both PPG and ECG to provide the highest sensitivity for pulse transfer times. The module can be turned off by software when standby current is close to zero, which reduces battery loss but allows the power rail to remain powered at all times. The MAX86150 uses a 3.3mm x 6.6mm x 1.3mm 22-pin optical module.
