Intersil introduces the high-speed RS-485 transceiver with the highest enhanced isolation level

     Intersil announced the launch of two new high-speed isolated RS-485 differential bus transceivers, ISL32741E and ISL32740E, that provide 40Mbps two-way data communication for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. The ISL32741E offers 1,000 VRMS operating voltage and 6kV enhanced isolation, more than 2 times higher than competing solutions, and meets the higher operating voltage and enhanced isolation required for today's most demanding medical and high-speed motor control applications. With 2.5kV isolation capability and 600VRMS operating voltage, the ISL32740E features the industry's smallest package to help programmable logic controllers (PLCS) in factory automation applications achieve high channel density.

     The ISL3274xE transceiver offers many advantages over other isolation technologies, including ultra-low radiation emission and EMI sensitivity, support for up to 160 devices on the bus, and a higher temperature range of 125°C. These devices utilize giant magnetoresistance (GMR) technology to provide current isolation to keep the communication bus free from common-mode noise generated in electrically noisy factory and building automation environments. In addition, Intersil's GMR isolation does not require complex coding, as capacitive and transformer-based isolators that use RF carrier or pulse-width modulation (PWM) to transmit DC and low-frequency signals across barriers often do.

     The ISL3274xE transceiver is ideal for the device-to-bus interface in PROFIBUS DP and high-speed RS-485 networks that connect PLCS to instruments, robots, motor control drives, data acquisition and digital I/O modules. In addition to not requiring any shielding, these transceivers simplify PCB layout, take up less board space, and improve the reliability and integrity of data transmission. At the same time, the ISL3274xE device also achieves low power consumption. For example, the ISL32740EIAZ's 60mA power supply current allows it to operate at top speed in a tiny 4mm x 5mm QSOP package without overheating.

     On the non-isolated control side, the ISL3274xE transceiver supports a direct connection to a 3V microcontroller (MCU), while the isolated bus side is connected to a higher 5V voltage power supply to transmit powerful bus signals over distances of 100 meters and longer. The ISL3274xE transceiver is fully compliant with EN 50081 and EN 50082-2 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standards and the Information Technology Equipment (ITE) EN 61000 umbrella line voltage standard.

     Philip Chesley, Intersil's vice president of industrial simulation and Power products, said: "Our latest high-speed RS-485 isolated transceivers emit almost no EMI, and they eliminate the ground loop between bus nodes to protect data transmission. The ISL32741E's high operating voltage and ability to push the reinforced isolation barrier up to 6kV will help customers solve their most difficult IIoT network design problems."
