Intersil introduces the ISL94203 3-8 battery pack detector
Intersil announced the introduction of the ISL94203 3-8 battery pack detector to support lithium-ion or other chemical batteries used in medical mobile service vehicles, wheelchairs, electric bicycles, hand-held power tools, vacuum cleaners and solar or renewable energy storage systems. The device accurately detects, protects, and balances rechargeable battery packs to maximize battery life and ensure safe charging and system operation. The device is now available through Intersil's global distribution partners.
Original equipment manufacturers (Oems) are now moving away from nickel-cadmium and lead-acid batteries in favor of more environmentally friendly lithium-ion chemical batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are smaller, lighter and last longer, but they need to be tested and protected for safe use. The ISL94203 can be used as a standalone battery management system for rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs. Its internal state machine has five pre-programmed stages that accurately control each cell of the battery pack for extended operating time. The ISL94203 integrates a high-side charge/discharge FET driver circuit, enabling customers to ensure the reliability of their designed battery pack grounding.
The ISL94203 includes a number of programmable protection and detection features to protect the battery pack from catastrophic events, such as short circuits and short circuits in individual battery voltages. Its open circuit check function ensures that the IC is securely connected to the battery pack. In addition, the device has a special protection function to fuse the polysilicon fuse in the event of a catastrophic failure, so that the battery pack interrupted work. In addition to providing diagnostic information, the ISL94203 can withstand battery pack hot swap events and support a full range of lithium-ion chemical batteries.
