Infineon introduces high-voltage MCUS with USB-C PD and booster charge controller

     USB-C has been widely adopted by the consumer electronics industry as the connector of choice and is expected to replace most traditional power adapters up to 240 W. With the global transition to USB-C-based DC power supplies, fast charging protocols are increasingly popular, and the functionality and user experience of power supplies are further improved. To meet the demand created by this trend, Infineon Technologies introduces the EZ-PD PMG1-B1, which further complements the EZ-PD PMG1 series of high-voltage microcontrollers (MCUS) with USB-C power transmission (PD).

     PMG1-B1 PD MCU is a single chip solution that integrates USB-C PD controller, booster battery charging controller, high voltage protection circuit and microcontroller. The product is primarily aimed at battery-powered applications such as power tools, personal care products, smart appliances, and other portable devices.

     Ganesh Subramaniam, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Wired Connectivity Solutions product Line, Infineon Technologies, said: "As the market leader in USB-C PD microcontrollers, we are excited to bring the new PMG1-B1 PD MCUS to the market. This product simplifies USB-C PD integration in battery-powered systems for Oems. "This MCU offers a very high degree of integration, enabling USB-C PD connectivity, battery charging, high-voltage protection, and MCU functions from a single chip."

     The device is USB PD 3.1 certified and uses Infineon's market-proven EZ-PD stack to ensure compliance with the latest USB-C and PD specifications and interoperability. It combines a USB-C PD controller, a ups and down battery charging controller, a 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0 processor, and a 128KB flash memory MCU, and combines a range of analog and digital peripherals such as timers, UART, SPI, I²C interfaces, and PWM. In addition, the PMG1-B1 integrates other high voltage circuits such as Vbus-powered regulators, FET gate drivers and advanced fault protection circuits including overvoltage, overcurrent protection and VBUS to CC short circuit protection to ensure robust and reliable operation.

     PMG1-B1 PD MCUS support A wide input voltage range of 4 V to 24 V with a 40 V tolerance and programmable switching frequency (150 to 600 kHz), providing up to 100 W (20 V, 5 A) power to USB-C ports. This makes it possible to charge 2-string to 5-string batteries in an all-in-one USB-C PD MCU solution. The high level of integration of this MCU provides customers with a compact single-chip solution and cost savings.

     To support application development for implementing MCUS, Infineon also provides developers with the ModusToolbox firmware development environment. The development environment can be used with the appropriate Board level Support Package (BSP) and EZ-PD PMG1 software development Tool Kit (SDK) without requiring expert device knowledge.
