Infineon has introduced advanced battery backup unit technology for AI data centers, further completing its roadmap for powering AI

Infineon Technologies AG has announced a roadmap for a new generation of AI data center battery backup Unit (BBU) solutions to ensure uninterrupted operation of AI data centers and avoid the risk of power outages and data loss. This comprehensive BBU roadmap includes power solutions from 4 kW to the world's first 12 kW BBU. The BBU solution delivers efficient, stable, and scalable power conversion capabilities in AI server racks, while delivering a power density up to 400% higher than the industry average.
The BBU is critical for AI data centers, in addition to ensuring uninterrupted power supply and protecting sensitive AI hardware from voltage spikes, surges, and other power anomalies. The BBU solution works with architectures such as PSU, IBC, PDB and PoL to further strengthen Infineon's leadership in the field of AI power supply.
Adam White, President of the Power and Sensing Systems division at Infineon Technologies, said: "Ensuring uninterrupted power supply for AI systems is critical to maintaining continuity and seamless operation of the computing process. Designed specifically for AI servers, our energy efficient BBus offers superior performance, flexibility and efficiency to make AI servers run smoothly while meeting the needs of multiple power levels. Infineon knows how to use the three high-power semiconductor materials of silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), and we are confident that our semiconductor solutions will set a new standard for powering AI data centers."
Downtime or system failures in an AI data center can lead to significant losses. According to the 2024 ITIC survey, 41% of companies surveyed reported losses ranging from $1 million to more than $5 million per hour of downtime. 35% of these failures are attributed to the quality of the power supply components. To solve this problem, Infineon introduces Partial Power converters (PPC). This solution can effectively improve the performance and reliability of the power system, and is a leading technology applicable to the BBU. The intermediate solution, represented by the 5.5kW BBU, uses Infineon's exclusive topology and combines Si and GaN technology to achieve ultra-high efficiency and power density.
The industry-first 12 kW system combines multiple 4 kW power conversion cards with Infineon PSOCTM MCUS, 40 V and 80 V OptiMOS TM and EiceDRIVER TM drives for extreme performance and flexibility, with a power density four times higher than the industry average. Connecting multiple converter cards in parallel on the motherboard allows for higher power levels, improved system scalability and simplified maintenance. If one of the power conversion cards fails, the system will continue to work without stopping, but reduce the output power. With this modular approach, the system can be adapted to meet specific power needs without the need to redesign the entire system, providing customers with superior performance and reliability benefits.
