FG25 sub-GHz SoC with long transmission distance, large memory and high security
Silicon Labs, a leader in creating a more connected world with secure, smart wireless technology, has announced full availability of its flagship FG25 sub-GHz SoC, which is available through Silicon Labs and its distributor partners. Built specifically for low-power wide area networks (LPWans) like Wi-SUN and proprietary sub-GHz protocols, the FG25 is a flagship SoC with a powerful ARM Cortex-M33 processor and more memory.
The FG25 is an ideal SoC for long-distance, low-power transmission, and when used in conjunction with the Silicon Labs EFF01 front-end module, is capable of achieving transmission distances of up to 3km in dense urban environments with very little data loss. With deployments that scale to thousands of nodes, strong security and scalability make it ideal for smart cities and long-distance iot.
FG25 is also the first SoC in Silicon Labs' portfolio to support orthogonal Frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation, which was introduced in the Wi-SUN Area Network (FAN) 1.1 specification. OFDM supports high data transfer rates of up to 3.6 Mbps, which helps FG25 achieve features such as long-distance transmission, high throughput and low latency in sub-GHz Wi-SUN applications. Silicon Labs has been certified by the Wi-SUN Alliance for the FAN 1.1 PHY layer. Customers can take advantage of this certification to reduce their burden when designing devices that comply with the Wi-SUN FAN 1.1 specification.
FG25 SoCs have been adopted by several early participating customers around the world, with Landis+Gyr upgrading its smart meter applications through the FG25 and Wi-SUN protocols. As a global leader in energy management, Landis+Gyr has earlier used Silicon Labs' EFR32FG12 sub-GHz SoC in its smart metering solutions with promising results.
Now, Landis+Gyr has further enhanced the performance of its smart metering solutions with FG25 SoC. The FG25 can use the same dimensions as Landis+Gyr's previous modules to easily make existing products Wi-SUN or OFDM capable if necessary. Landis+Gyr can also run its proprietary protocol stack on FG25 and enable a smooth transition to Wi-SUN for existing customers using proprietary communications protocols.
