Broadcom unveils 28nm electronics that support long range multimode
Broadcom has announced the industry's first 28 nanometer (nm) electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) physical layer transceiver (PHY) that supports long range multimode (LRM). As the latest device in Broadcom's industry-leading 1/10/40GbE physical layer portfolio, the device significantly reduces power consumption and improves performance. Broadcom is showcasing its latest innovations in high-speed connectivity at the Fiber Optic Communications Expo and Conference (OFC) in Los Angeles, California, March 24-26. The increasing data processing and data transmission bandwidth requirements are increasing the demand for devices with lower per-port power consumption, better performance, and higher port density. Broadcom's new physical layer devices reduce power consumption by 30%, 1 and provide more powerful feature sets and flexible path-compatible migration paths for enterprise and service provider networks seeking better performance and greater bandwidth capacity.
Lorenzo Longo, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Physical Layer Products division, said: "As network bandwidth and traffic demands continue to increase, it is particularly important for our customers to move to lighter product designs and significantly reduce power consumption. To this end, Broadcom continues to increase its investment in related technologies, introducing low-power EDC/LRM physical layer devices with leading feature Settings."
The EDC based BCM82780 is capable of 10/40GbE data transmission by supporting LRM. In addition, the BCM82780 is capable of handling short distance (SR), long distance (LR), and very long distance (ER and ZR) fiber interfaces, making it more flexible to support a variety of high bandwidth applications. The multi-rate physical layer devices are ideal for single-mode fiber (SMF), multi-mode fiber (MMF) or biaxial copper applications on the front board. With a full DSP high-speed front end, the device offers line card designers the best performance and flexibility on 40GbE, 10GbE or 1GbE systems.
