Broadcom launches smartwatch platform that extends battery life of Android Wear devices
Broadcom has introduced a new smartwatch platform that dramatically reduces the power consumption of Android Wear devices. The platform will offer more features to original equipment manufacturers (Oems), including GPS and wireless charging support for sensor hub processing.
Compared to the previous generation of products, Broadcom's new smartwatch platform will significantly reduce power consumption by 40%, further improving the core issue of battery consumption in wearable devices. The platform's smaller appearance and more complete features and performance allow Oems to add more features or embed larger capacity batteries into wearables, thereby reducing the number of charges.
In addition to integrating advanced application processors (aps) and Broadcom's leading wireless networking and Bluetooth combination chips, the new platform also allows Oems to choose to integrate a number of other features based on their product needs, including GPS, NFC, wireless charging support and camera support for sensor hub processing. Smartwatch products are expected to account for more than half of wearable device shipments in 2015, 2 which presents significant opportunities for companies that can incorporate multiple features and bring products to market quickly.
Larry Olivas, senior director of Wireless Connectivity portfolio business development at Broadcom, said: "Smartwatches have a large share of wearables. Broadcom's new platform opens up new opportunities for developers designing high-end and affordable Android Wear devices. As one of the semiconductor suppliers for most of the top smartwatches in 2015, our expertise and long-standing leadership in this space will drive the next wave of wearables development."
By providing a complete smartwatch reference design that includes hardware, Android Wear device enabling software, an optimized bill of materials (BOM), and a range of features, Broadcom can help Oems quickly develop powerful products and get ahead of the market.
